Andrew Walford is living in Natal in the wavy peacefulness of the Shongweni Hills halfway between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. His studio is surrounded by the African jungle that forms an inexhaustible source of inspiration for his decorations with its trees and birds. Andrew Walford is a potter who is digging his clay himself and who is preparing it consciously to his own high standard. Working in the Japanese tradition with specially imported brushes from Japan his pots are decorated with thick chun glazes. These are hand seeved from wood ashes, with colours like rich sounding tenmoku’s, fat white shino’s and celadons in several shades. All this made him wellknown as the “Zulu Zen Potter”.
