Serge Cousseran creates glazed objects, decorative unique pieces as well as table ware in small series. He started in 1977 as self taught potter.
“My greatest pleasure is playing with glaze as a painter and dream away at the results”.
He throws, models or works with slabs, for the table ware he uses porcelain in rolls or balls. For the sculptural pieces he uses stoneware clay.
After a first biscuit firing S.C. glazes the work using his own receipts. The glaze is always applied in several layers with a ladle, with airbrush or by immersing.
The object get a final firing in reducing atmosphere at 1280 °C.
Recent work has 2 directions:
1- The rocks. This work is inspired by the streaming to and fro of the waves on the Atlantic coast. He specially loves the subtle diversity of the colour range that happens when he puts rich layers of glaze on a base of celadon. The angular character and the strong presence of form is compensated by the softness of the obtained tones.
2- The family of porcelain objects that allow him to work with glaze as a painter, his pictorial research, here to from several layers superstitioned on round and sensual forms.
